Top Commando Ben McBean of 40 Commando lost an arm and a leg in an horrific landmine blast last month when he was on a patrol in Helmand, Afghanistan. His comrades pulled him up and put him on a quadbike so they could get him out of the danger area and back to British Army HQ. After his life was saved by Army medics in the field he was flown home to the UK where he is now undergoing surgery at Selly Oak.
Ben's Mum said: "I hadn’t wanted him to leave. I told him, ‘Son, please stay’, but he was raring to go. We’re a very proud British family and Ben is proud to be a Marine, proud to wear the beret and proud of his country. He wanted to go and serve more than anything else.”
His Dad was full of praise for the support Ben and the family is receiving from his comrades still in Afghanistan, the medical teams and the Ministry of Defence: "The treatment he has received is incredible. The doctors are amazing and the MoD have been faultless in their support."

It's for soldiers like Ben that the Sun's Help for Heroes campaign is raising funds. The money raised will purchase the equipment and facilities necessary to ensure the successful recovery and rehabilitation for our injured troops.
The Nation owes Ben a great debt of gratitude for the sacrifice he has made on our behalf.
Ben McBean: what a fine role model for the kids today!
Update 31/03/08. Ben has said: “As soon as I get an artificial arm and leg I’m going to train for a marathon so I can raise cash for Help For Heroes – I’m going to train like hell......The men and women who come back with injuries like me deserve help to get their lives back on track – and that is what Headley Court does. Soldiers need to know that if something happens they’ll be OK. That’s got to be worth a couple of pounds from anyone’s pocket.”
Help For Heroes aims to raise £7million to build a gym and pool at Headley Court.
