Now it's OK to blog

It wasn't that long ago that serving members of the Armed Forces were being banned from posting their war experiences on the internet. Now it seems that not only is the National Recognition Study proposing to reduce some of the restrictions on the Forces' freedom to speak to the media but the MoD's 'Online Engagement Strategy' is actually encouraging servicemen to post upbeat videos of military life on websites such as YouTube and MySpace in a bid to win the hearts and minds of young people. Of course it's not quite as simple as that: the MoD communications staff will be monitoring what's happening presumably to ensure that postings are appropriate and on-message. The OES report concludes that the risks are outweighed by the prospect of being able to "bypass the mainstream media" and communicate directly with their young target audience - and presumably boost recruitment.
