Because of the UK's
commitments under the European Defence Agency rules British taxpayers are having to stomp up cash to finance France's "mission" to its former colony of Chad.

So there you have it:
- France, having withdrawn the few forces it did have helping British troops in Helmand, has just refused to provide little more than minimal assistance to its NATO allies fighting in Afghanistan.
- Britain, its military budgets being squeezed, is paying £5.9million towards the French-inspired EU military mission to Chad.
Nice one, Gordon.
