British troops standby for Kosovo

There have been numerous reports from both inside and outside the military establishment expressing fears that the British Armed Forces, particularly the Army, is currently so overstretched by its commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan that there is a serious risk that exisiting manpower and budgets will not be able to sustain the current levels of fighting. Yet now we hear that the Government is considering deploying another large Army contingent, probably the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, to Kosovo. This must surely be a deployment too far even for this government always keen as it is to posture on the international stage. Let the Germans take on this mission, or the Italians or the Greeks, or even the French!
