Just a few days ago it was reported that only a third of the heliocopters out in Iraq and Afghanistan were available for frontline operations or "fit for purpose" as they say these days. Today the MoD has announced the stand-up of a second squadron, No 78 Squadron which is expected will be joining the existing No 28 Squadron in Iraq. No 78 Squadron will be flying 28 Merlin heliocopters, six of which have recently been acquired from Denmark.
I hope the RAF have better luck with their secondhand heliocopters than I've had with the secondhand car I've just acquired. At least with 28 of them they'll be able to use any duds for spare parts if needs be, whereas my car's got to go to the local car cemetery.
