Joe McDonald, chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, has proposed that the Royal Anglian Regiment be granted the freedom of the town of Royston in Hertfordshire. Mr McDonald said he thought this would be a good way of showing the community's support for its local regiment and it would recognise the service the Regiment has provided to the country, especially during its recent deployment in Afghanistan. "It would show we care very much and we fear for their safety, and that they have our utmost respect for the job they are doing for our Queen and country," he added.
His suggestion has been taken on board by Royston's mayor and town council and they are now considering whether and how this would be done. The occasion could become a "Day of Recognition" which would include a parade by members of the Regiment and a service at the town's war memorial.

Let's hope the Council adopts Joe's proposal.
