Veterans still have battles to fight

They're back from the front line - so why are these ex-soldiers still fighting their own wars? They fought and nearly died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once discharged from the army, these men face huge personal problems - homelessness, unemployment and depression - without adequate support. But after doing their bit for their country, shouldn't their country do its bit for them?
Such are the opening sentences in an article in today's Observer. The article goes on to describe how still today, after all the promises and all the fawning words from hypocritical Labour politicians and Ministry of Defence bureaucrats, servicemen and women can still be treated shamefully when they are discharged from the Armed Forces; treated shamefully by local councils, insurance and mortgage companies, employment agencies, government departments and, even more dishonourably, by the Army itself.
Read the article; it makes for salutary reading.
